Les notions à connaître

Adjectif court

Une syllabe (tall, big, fast) ou deux syllabes terminées en -y (easy, pretty, happy). Il forme son comparatif en -er et son superlatif en -est.

Adjectif long

Deux syllabes ou plus (interesting, difficult, expensive). Il forme son comparatif avec 'more' et son superlatif avec 'the most'.

Comparatif d'égalité

AS + adjectif + AS : « This exercise is as difficult as the last one ». À la forme négative, il exprime l'infériorité : « not as difficult as ».

Superlatif

Compare un élément à tout un ensemble et s'accompagne obligatoirement de 'the' : « the most interesting book I've ever read ».

Comparatifs irréguliers

good $\to$ better $\to$ the best ; bad $\to$ worse $\to$ the worst ; far $\to farther/further \to$ the$farthest/furthest.$ Ils ne prennent ni -er ni 'more'.

Comparatifs corrélés

Structure « the + comparatif…, the + comparatif… » pour traduire « plus…, plus… » : « The more you practise, the easier it gets ».

Intensifieur

Mot qui gradue un comparatif et se place devant lui : much, far, a lot (beaucoup), slightly, a bit (légèrement), nearly (presque). 'Very' est impossible devant un comparatif.

Les erreurs à éviter en anglais

• ✗ She is more tall than her brother.

  ✓ She is TALLER than her brother. ('tall' est court : il prend -er, jamais 'more'.)

• ✗ This is the most interesting book I've ever read — sans 'the'.

  ✓ This is THE most interesting book I've ever read. (Le superlatif exige 'the'.)

• ✗ This exercise is as difficult than the last one.

  ✓ …AS difficult AS the last one. ('than' va avec un comparatif ; l'égalité se construit avec as… as.)

• ✗ She is prettyer than her sister.

  ✓ She is PRETTIER than her sister. (Le -y final devient -i devant la terminaison.)

• ✗ He is very older than me.

  ✓ He is MUCH older than me. ('very' ne se place jamais devant un comparatif : on emploie much, far, a lot, slightly, a bit.)
