Identity

Identité. Ex : Cultural identity is shaped by language, traditions and values.

Heritage

Héritage culturel, patrimoine. Ex : They are proud of their Irish heritage.

Roots

Racines (origines). Ex : She went back to Africa to reconnect with her roots.

Belonging (sense of)

Sentiment d'appartenance. Ex : Immigrants often struggle with a sense of belonging.

Multiculturalism

Multiculturalisme. Ex : London is a symbol of multiculturalism.

Diversity

Diversité. Ex : Cultural diversity enriches society.

Immigration / Emigration

Immigration (arrivée) / émigration (départ). Ex : Immigration has always been a hot topic in the US.

Melting pot / Salad bowl

Melting pot = fusion des cultures. Salad bowl = coexistence sans fusion. Deux métaphores clés pour les USA.

Les erreurs à éviter en anglais

• ✗ The immigration is a problem.

  ✓ Immigration is a complex issue. (Pas d'article 'the' devant un concept général. Et 'issue' est plus nuancé que 'problem'.)

• ✗ He is an immigrant since 10 years.

  ✓ He has been an immigrant for 10 years. (Durée + present perfect. 'For' + durée, pas 'since' + durée.)

• ✗ Peoples from different countries…

  ✓ People from different countries… ('People' est déjà pluriel. 'Peoples' = peuples, nations — sens différent.)

• ✗ He has an actual problem with racism.

  ✓ He has a real problem with racism. (Faux ami : 'actual' = réel, pas 'actuel'. 'Current' = actuel.)

• ✗ She is originated from India.

  ✓ She originates from India. / She is originally from India. (Pas de passif pour 'originate'. Ou utiliser l'adverbe 'originally'.)
