Art engagé. Ex : Street art is often a form of committed art.

Propaganda

Propagande. Ex : Propaganda posters were widely used during World War II.

Censorship (of art)

Censure artistique. Ex : Many books have been banned or censored throughout history.

To denounce / To criticise

Dénoncer / critiquer. Ex : The artist denounces social injustice through his paintings.

Protest / Dissent

Protestation / dissidence. Ex : Music has always been a vehicle for protest.

To raise awareness

Sensibiliser. Ex : This documentary raises awareness about climate change.

Soft power

Puissance douce (influence culturelle). Ex : Hollywood is a major tool of American soft power.

Cultural influence

Influence culturelle. Ex : The British cultural influence is visible worldwide through the English language.

Les erreurs à éviter en anglais

• ✗ The music of protest…

  ✓ Protest music… (En anglais, le nom composé place le qualificatif avant : protest music, street art, war poetry.)

• ✗ This film denounces about racism.

  ✓ This film denounces racism. ('Denounce' est transitif direct en anglais, pas de préposition.)

• ✗ An engaged artist

  ✓ A committed artist / a politically engaged artist. ('Engaged' seul signifie plutôt 'fiancé' en anglais courant.)

• ✗ The art is important for the society.

  ✓ Art is important for society. (Concepts généraux : pas d'article 'the' devant 'art' ni 'society'.)

• ✗ He painted a paint of the queen.

  ✓ He painted $a portrait/painting$ of the queen. ('Paint' = la peinture (matière). 'Painting' = un $tableau/une$ peinture.)
